Charity Fiesta is about the spirit of volunteerism, giving to the needy and lending them a helping hand. Initiated in 1992, the NUSSU Volunteer Action Committee ( NVAC ) has successfully achieved their three-in-one goal in organising Charity Fiesta. This year, the event will be held from 19-21 August 2002, Monday-Wednesday, from 9am-5pm, at the Forum, National University of Singapore.

Besides fund raising, Charity Fiesta 2002 will showcase 22 beneficiaries in Singapore. This exhibition will serve to enable the masses to better understand the roles played by the various Voluntary Welfare Organisations ( VWO ) as well as to heighten the awareness of volunteerism. It is also a place where demand will supply. It is hoped that upon understanding, more people will come forth to render their assistance towards the less fortunate sector of the society. There will also be a carnival that sells all kinds of food, handicrafts, accessories, and etc, which aims to encourage the beneficiaries to engage in economically productive activities. For a good cause, People's Association Youth Movement, Southwest Community Development Council, Lee Foundation, Burmese Buddhist Temple and National Youth Council will be supporting this annual event.

Be assured that you will definitely captivated by the lunch time concerts staged on all three days, featuring an array of local, student and celebrity performers as well as performers from the beneficiaries. Guest DJs will also be invited to host the programmes. This year, the organising committee has invited Mrs Yu-Fu Yee Soon, Mayor of South west Community Development Council, to grace the opening ceremony.

Make a Wish from the Heart

On Saturday, 6th July 2002, I had the privilege to photograph the festivities held for the beneift of some special children at the Rainforest Cafe. The event, organised by Hewlett-Packard Singapore (HP) and People's Association Youth Movement (PAYM), was for the special children from the AWWA Special School.

The event kicked off with the arrival of the children accompanied by the volunteers from HP and PAYM assisting the children. Each child was assigned two "minders" who were responsible for feeding and looking after the child for the duration of the event. The children were seen tucking in to a veritable feast of food and were thoroughly enjoying themselves

After the kids had had their fill of delicious food, it was time for some fun and games, which was kicked off by a magician/balloon man who made the children very happy with his skilfulness in twisting balloons into interesting and incredible shapes.
Then came Ranger West to educate the children about the rainforests and the threat of extinction to the animals. As part of this talk, he brought along a python and chinchilla for show-and-tell. The kids were allowed to touch and hold the animals which many of the kids did as this may have been their opportunity to be up close and personal with nature, albeit for a very brief moment.

All in all, it was a very special day for the children. HP personnel were on hand to print out the pictures as they were taken, and the children and their parents were very happy to be able to take home a personal memento of the occasion. Also, some of the children were overjoyed to see their images when played back to them from the LCD ... ah! the wonders of technology.
